A lovely vase with a white and pale brown coloured glaze, in great condition from Scheurich, West Germany. West Germany art pottery  Between 1949 and 1990s, the term West German Art Pottery became the way to describe German pottery because the country of origin was often the only “mark” on the base, at times it is only a number and/or only saying Germany. Some of the factories worth mentioning are Dümler & Breiden, Jasba, Ruscha, Tönnieshof, Scheurich and Carstens, the term “West German pottery” remains a generic term for their ceramics, mostly known for their wide range of shapes of vases. The terms Fat Lava and West German Art Pottery are often used interchangeably but are actually different. The term Fat Lava relates to the thick glaze that gives the pottery a lava-like look and was used commonly by the German pottery industry. Inspiration came from contemporary events such as pop art and the atmosphere of the race to the moon era. It was in 1969 when the first man landed on the moon. The work of the main producers in the style concentrated on single decorative items such as vases, jugs and bowls, art ceramics and interior design objects rather than tableware. Alois Scheurich and his cousin Fridolin Greulich started in 1928 a wholesale company in glass, porcelain and ceramics in Schneeberg, Germany. In 1948 they started their own production of household ceramics sold under the name "Scheurich & Greulich." 1954 continued Alois Scheurich the ceramic production on his own and founded Scheurich Keramikfabrik KG. In 1955 the designer Heinz Siery joined Scheurich. He developed and introduced new production methods. The strategy was to develop relatively simple shapes that could be decorated with many different glazes and fat lava techniques, visible in their wide range of vases. Scheurich was the company that produced most ceramics of all companies...

This vase 242-22 was produced in the 1960s in West Germany by the Scheurich. This vase is made of ceramics using the fat lava technique. Partially covered characteristic network of cracks resulting from accidental defects, aging of the glaze or an effect intended to decorate the products. Shiny purple red and expressive emerald color show the object a rare character. Scheurich has always used white clay, the color of which is visible on the bottom edge of the vase. The vase is signed W.GERMANY and has model number and the height of the vase. It also has an original label with the name of the company. The Scheurich company was founded in 1928 by Scheuri cousins, but it was not until 1948 that it began producing home ceramics. It mainly produced vases and flower pots, but also ashtrays, candlesticks, cups, clock buffets...
