Loetz Vase Art Nouveau Secessionist Art Glass Phaenomen 6893 Antique Lötz
Located in Bad Säckingen, DE
Antique Art Nouveau chalice shaped art glass vase created by the Loetz glassworks company, which was active during the late 19th and early 20th centuries, this vase represents a prime example of their artistic mastery. The vase features a cobalt blue ground that adds depth and richness to its overall appearance. Its surface showcases a captivating iridescent wave pattern, which adds a mesmerizing shimmer and dynamic quality to the glass. This iridescence is a hallmark of Loetz glassware and is achieved through the application of special techniques during the glassblowing process. The chalice-form of the vase gives it an elegant and graceful silhouette. This design creates a harmonious balance between the visually striking upper portion and the sturdy base. Loetz glasswares are renowned for their exceptional artistry and their ability to capture and play with light. The Phaenomen Genre 6893 vase, with its dark blue color and iridescent wave pattern, is no exception. When light interacts with the glass, it reveals a captivating range of colors and reflections, making it a visually stunning and attention-grabbing piece. As an antique Loetz glass vase...

In 1836, Johann Eisner established a glassworks in the Southern Bohemian town of Klostermühle, today part of the Czech Republic and called Klášterský Mlýn. His heirs sold the glassworks to Martin Schmid in 1849, and two years later Schmid sold it to Frank Gerstner, attorney-at-law, and his wife Susanne. Susanne was the widow (‘Witwe’ in German) of Johann Loetz, a glassmaker about whom we know very little. Gerstner transferred sole ownership to Susanne shortly before his death in 1855, and she successfully led and expanded the company during the subsequent 20 years, manufacturing mainly crystal, overlay and painted glass. In 1879, Susanne transferred the company – now called ‘Johann Loetz Witwe’ – to Maximilian von Spaun, the son of her daughter Karoline. One year later, von Spaun hired Eduard Prochaska and the two of them modernized the factory and introduced new, patented techniques and processes. The Historicist Period The first fruits of this collaboration were exciting innovations in Historicism glass, including Intarsia and Octopus glass and the very popular marbled (‘marmorisierte’) glass which imitated semi-precious stones like red chalcedony, onyx and malachite. Success at exhibitions in Brussels, Munich and Vienna were crowned by awards at the Paris World’s Exposition in 1889. In 1897, von Spaun first saw Tiffany Favrile glass exhibited in Bohemia and Vienna, and this convinced him that the art nouveau style was also the way to go for Loetz Witwe. The next eight years were to be the most artistically significant and profitable period in the entire history of the company. The Art Nouveau Period – the Glory Years Loetz Paris-Expo1900Loetz Paris-Expo1900The glassworks created large numbers of its own new designs of iridescent, trailing art nouveau glass, sometimes in collaboration with well-known artists and designers like Marie Kirschner and Franz Hofstötter (aka Franz Hofstätter). The zenith of Loetz art nouveau glass was epitomized by the so-called Phänomen series of designs, much of it designed by Hofstötter, which won a Grand Prix (alongside Tiffany, Gallé, Daum and Lobmeyr) at the Paris World’s Exposition in 1900. The company’s success during this period had two prime drivers – the technical expertise of Prochaska and the business acumen of von Spaun. Loetz Witwe created many of its own designs, and also supplied glass commissioned by major customers like E. Bakolowits (Vienna) and Max Emanuel...

Loetz Chalice Art Nouveau Candia Butterfly, 1889
Located in NANTES, FR
Loetz 1899 chalice in yellow glass model Candia butterfly. Glassware in perfect condition. Height: 30.5cm Collar diameter: 18.5 cm Base diameter: 11.5 cm Weight: 750g. In 1836, Johann Eisner established a glassworks in the South Bohemian town of Klostermühle, which today is part of the Czech Republic and called Klášterský Mlýn. His heirs sold Martin Schmidt's glassworks in 1849, and two years later Schmidt sold it to Frank Gerstner, a lawyer, and his wife Susanne. She was the widow of Johann Loetz, a glassmaker of whom we know very little. Gerstner transferred the company to Susanne shortly before her death in 1855, and she ran it successfully, primarily the manufacture of crystal, layering, and painted glass. In 1879 Susanne transferred the business now called "Johann Loetz Witwe" to Maximilien von Spaun, the son of her daughter Karoline. A year later, von Spaun hired Edouard Prochaska to modernize the factory and use new techniques, with the filing of patents. The first fruits of this collaboration are interesting innovations in glass. Success at the exhibition in Brussels. Munich and Vienna were crowned with prizes, also at the Universal Exhibition in Paris in 1889. In 1897, von Spaun saw Tiffany's products exhibited in Bohemia and Vienna, which convinced him that the Art Nouveau style was also the way forward for Loetz Witwe. The next eight years were the most artistically significant and profitable period in the company's entire history. Loetz produced many Art Nouveau pieces. The LOETZ Style: The special and typical color and relief of Loetz glasses give them an extremely refined touch. Loetz was also one of the pioneers in the use of electrolytic deposition techniques, and he patented many processes. The innovative and original forms used by Loetz and inspired by the glass objects of ancient Persian and Roman Art, are typical of glassware in the Art Nouveau style. Other equally popular Loetz designs are nature-inspired vases decorated with original "swan's neck" or "peacock" color shapes in iridescent blue-green tones. In 1904, begins the beginning of the decline. After the first world war, a temporary respite appeared thanks to the production of popular colored opal glass, but the inevitable investments in the renovation of the glassworks in 1920 led to new financial problems. Lacking new ideas, Loetz Witwe reverted to an adaptation of his old Art Nouveau sets to the Art Deco style, but sales continued to decline. The Great Depression in the 1920s and another fire in 1930 hit the company. During the 1930s, the glass factory changed owners several times. It closed for long periods and finally declared bankruptcy, once again in 1939, after the German invasion of Czechoslovakia. Futility glassware manufactured for the 3rd Reich...
