Rudolph Carl Gorman "Navajo Cousins" Limited Edition Vase Signed RC Gorman, 1990

About

Original, rare, limited edition of only 100 in the world, handmade and hand painted bulbous ceramic vase with matte lilac exterior, features three seated Navajo women in vibrant polychrome glazed finish. The inside of the vase is dark purple glaze finish. This vase was executed in 1990 by famous American deceased artist, Rudolph Carl Gorman (1931-2005), signed R. C. Gorman and numbered CTP/100, on the lower front of the vase. This is a rare color test proof. The vase is flat signed in black marker on the bottom with the following information: 1990 Gorman Ltd. Ed. Copyright symbol. "Navajo Cousins" and RC Gorman initials. The vase sits on a custom made circular gray slate stone pivoting plateau measuring approximately 11.75" in circumference. The plateau rotates, allowing a 360 degree viewing of the vase from all angles. Measurements: Height 9.75" Width 9.5" Opening 7" Base 6 Rudolph Carl Gorman was born on July 26, 1931, in Canyon de Chelly, Arizona and died November 3, 2005, in Albuquerque, New Mexico. He was raised in a hogan on the Navajo Reservation. Gorman became one of the Southwest's most famous and celebrated late 20th-century Native American artists. His signature works were Navajo women in a variety of poses. Referred to as the "Picasso of American Indian Artists" by The New York Times, his paintings are primarily of Native American women and characterized by fluid forms and vibrant colors, though he also worked in sculpture, ceramics and stone lithography. He abandoned the name "Rudolph" and signed his artwork with the initials R.C. In 1973 the Metropolitan Museum of Art included a number of his works in an exhibition on Native American Art, and in 1986 Harvard University honoured Gorman for his “notable contributions to American art and Native American culture.” His admirers included Andy Warhol, who painted Gorman on several occasions and who was among the many celebrities who collected his art. Gorman was also the author of a series of popular cookbooks.
