Tall Studio Pottery Ceramic Glazed Vase Warren Mackinzie
About the Item
A tall cylinder shape stoneware vase by American studio potter Warren MacKenzie (1924-2018). The vase displays a slightly ambiguous shape between circle and sqaure and it features two small loops on the shoulder. The surface is covered in a brilliant orange hued Shino like glaze. Clearly informed by the artist's Japanese Mingei aesthetic, the solid form and the details like the shoulder loops also suggest a playful nod to American vernacular pottery like the storage jar. Impressed artist's double stamp toward the base.
Warren MacKenzie was a student of Bernard Leach and Shoji Hamada, the British and Japanese potters who were masters of Mingei (folk art) pottery. Mackinzie is credited with bringing the functional Mingei tradition to the United States and spreading it through his own art and mentorship during his long tenure at the University of Minnesota.
