Two Empire Period Gilt Porcelain Vases by Dihl Et Guérhard

About the Item

These beautiful painted and gilt vases were crafted in circa 1810 by the important Parisian porcelain factory, Dihl et Guérhard (French, 1781-circa 1824). Porcelain items manufactured by Dihl et Guérhard can be found today in the British Museum in London, the Met Museum in New York and other prestigious decorative art collections. The vases are designed in a refined Neoclassical (or ‘Empire’) style, which came into fashion in the period when Napoleon Bonaparte was Emperor of France (1804-1814,1815). The porcelain vases are of campana form, featuring upside-down bell-shaped bodies with small handles in the form of classical masks. The vases Stand on splayed feet, on short square plinths. The vases are gilded and are finely painted with pinky-red geometric belts and green and white foliate bands. Their bodies feature green oval medallions which are painted with white, pink and gold lyres flanked by griffins and swans. These are set within fluted blue borders. ‘Dihl’ is signed onto the undersides of the vases.

  • Empire Style Porcelain and Gilt Bronze Napoleon Vase
    By Manufacture Nationale de Sèvres
    Located in London, GB
This Sevres style porcelain vase is beautifully painted with an image of Napoleon I on horseback. In this painting, Napoleon visits his men, some of whom are wounded, in what appears to be a military camp. He is seen, leading a group of mounted soldiers, on a white horse, respectfully doffing his bicorne hat to his troops. The painting is signed ‘F. Amblet’. This oval painting is given an elaborate gilded decorative border, reminiscent of a giltwood frame. These beautiful gold foliate patterns continue onto the base of the vase, as well as the top, where we see a pair of griffins. The vase is fitted with two handles, cast as double French imperial eagle heads, which spring from classical female masks, each wearing with winged helmets. ‘M.re IMPle de Sevres’ is painted its base.
