About

This gorgeous vase by Axel Salto has the most organic glaze I have ever seen on any ceramic object. It is as if the surface is saturated with chlorophyl. Resembling a large, imaginary tropical fruit, the ribbed form is a cousin of Salto's famous sprouting forms and like them is pleasantly tactile to handle. "The vase is like a living organism,'' Salto wrote in 1949. One senses with vases such as this one that Salto was not merely interested in appropriating natural forms to apply to vessels as decoration, but rather, in creating vessels that were somehow actual, though inanimate, organisms themselves. A very special piece.
