Vestige 09 Contemporary Peruvian Ceramic Vessel in Smoked Terracota Finish

$1,573.89

About

Studio Altar designed a limited edition of contemporary Peruvian pottery that showcases the line of the Vicus ceremonial water vessels, and the tradition of the north Peruvian pottery. Made using a Chulucanas technique that dates back to the Vicus Culture (North coast of Peru 300 BCE), and exploring the line of the Vicus ceremonial water vessels the design showcases a modern twist to the traditional Pre-Columbian style. Hand threw and hand painted using a natural engobe, Vestige 09 is then covered with a free drawing layer of liquid silt using brushes made with meadow vegetation. By placing the pottery in kilns filled with mango leaves, the terracotta pieces transform into a deep-black surface. The contrast of the white and black comes by taking out crust of silt with a wooden Hammer. Limited Edition of 10 pieces.

About The Maker

Studio Altar is a multidisciplinary design studio based in London and Amsterdam, established by Delphine Lejeune (Belgium) and Diego Lopez (Peru). Their practice is driven by a passion for traditional crafts and draws from the critical exploration of the crossover between vernacular aesthetics, history and cultural context of the communities the studio collaborates with. The main focus of Studio Altar is to preserve traditional artisanal techniques by creating narrative artefacts or engaging interventions. Whether working on self-initiated research projects or design commissions, our goal is to create a bridge between the past and the future of crafts.
