A striking and finely executed large vintage Greek ceramic museum copy vase, hand-crafted and hand-painted in Greece, circa 1980s. Seen fully images, this impressive attic style vessel is a masterful replica of a classical Athenian hydria (water jar) dating to the transition between the Archaic and Classical periods (circa 550–450 BC). True to its classical typology, the vase features a distinct three-handle layout: two horizontal side handles designed for lifting, and a robust vertical back handle spanning from the neck to the shoulder used for dipping and pouring. The primary decorative frieze on the front depicts a famous and dynamic mythological narrative: the Abduction of the Daughters of Leucippus by the Dioscuri (Castor and Pollux). This complex, multi-figure scene is populated by classical deities, fleeing maidens, and the twin heroes maneuvering a celestial chariot, all framed beautifully by an upper neck band of traditional palmettes. The reverse side is opulently anchored by the vertical pouring handle and adorned with a mirror-symmetrical, grand-scale arrangement of traditional palmette fans, flowing tendril scrolls, and stylized lotuses. Grounded by a traditional geometric Greek key (meander) base border and coated in a deep, semi-lustrous black glaze, this magnificent ceramic serves as a heavy, highly decorative classical statement piece perfect for a mantle, pedestal, or focal center table display. The unglazed terracotta underside of the base features clear, handwritten archival details labeling it a "Classic Period 550 B.C. Museum Copy Hand Made in Greece." Preserved perfectly on the foot is its original 1980s retail tag from its place of purchase in Europe, bearing a vintage price of €850.00. Adding an elite layer of academic and regional pedigree, this piece comes directly from the private estate of Dr. William A. Peck, the highly esteemed former Dean of the Washington University School of Medicine and Executive Vice Chancellor for Medical Affairs in St. Louis.
