Victorian Porcelain Spittoon, circa 1880 by Imari, Japan
Located in Incline Village, NV
The mark on the underneath (see image) indicates that this spittoon is of Japanese Imari porcelain, manufactured circa 1880, and made specifically for the American market for the preponderance of bars and saloons at that time. These were popular from 1865 to the turn of the century; this is a particularly fancy and elaborate example. Note the copious and highly detailed and beautiful floral decoration to the inside of the upper portion of the spittoon; pretty fancy for something meant for spit and saliva! Fantastic and all original condition with no cracks, no chips and very bright paint in sharp colors of blue rust and pink, and meticulously painted in a floral pattern. Several of these would have been “stationed” in strategic places within a saloon. This is a wonderful piece of porcelain, and quality item of saloon and Western United States history...

Located in Jesmond, Newcastle Upon Tyne

This exceptional antique Victorian sterling silver gilt goblet has a circular bulbous-shaped form onto a swept pedestal and circular spreading foot. The decoration to the body incorporates an impressive cartouche displaying the contemporary bright cut engraved crest depicting between two arms embowed a sun in splendour. The cylindrical upper rim is encompassed with further scrolling leaf decoration, flanked with an applied dart decorated border to the nadir and a moulded border to the rim. The cast silver waisted pedestal features a spiralling bead design, incorporating scrolling motifs to the upper portion, replicating the details of an architectural column. The circular spreading foot is embellished with impressive cast figural mask designs alternating with layered leaf motifs, all ornamented with further bead decoration. The swept rim of the slightly weighted base is further ornamented with a leaf decorated festoon. This sterling silver goblet retains the original gilding; the gilding to the exterior of the goblet has worn with age in a sympathetic fashion. Antique, New and Vintage Barware

Whether it’s streamlined or sophisticated, a bar area is always a welcoming feature in any home interior. A cheery well-made drink with friends and family has the potential to yield some unforgettable moments alongside those that aren’t easily remembered. And the only way to conjure that exemplary cordial is by putting the proper antique, new or vintage barware to work.

Essential barware equipment ranges from sterling-silver barspoons for mixing your cocktails in tall collins glasses to jiggers, shakers and strainers that allow you to whip up martinis and old-fashioneds.

From a design standpoint, some barware, such as our array of Art Deco glass whiskey sets or mid-century modern silver-banded tumblers crafted by Dorothy Thorpe, can help position your bar as a bold and attractive centerpiece to a room. At the very least, a carefully curated collection of barware can elevate with subtlety the bar’s nearby fixtures, as a handcrafted crystal decanter might do for your vintage 1960s bar cart.

As cocktail hour draws near, find inspiration in our gorgeous gallery of home bars in locales ranging from London to New York to San Francisco, and browse the exquisite selection of antique, new and vintage barware and glassware on 1stDibs.
