A magnificent, fine and impressive antique William IV English sterling silver wine cooler made by William Bateman II; an addition to our antique wine and drink related silverware collection
This magnificent antique William IV sterling silver wine cooler has a circular campania shaped form onto a circular spreading foot.
The surface of the cooler is embellished with exceptional cast and applied fruiting vine ornamentation, accented with grape clusters and three-dimensional leaf designs.
The body is further ornamented with large acanthus leaf designs, encompassing the underside of the bulbous portion.
This antique wine cooler is fitted with an exceptional pair of cast silver handles realistically modelled in the form of interlacing vines; this is a continuation of the fruiting vine decoration to the body.
This exceptional William Bateman wine cooler retains the original, hallmarked detachable liner and push fit cover.
The sterling silver torus-shaped cover is ornamented with an applied moulded border to the rim.
The surface of the lining is plain and embellished with a contemporary engraved crest of an eagle displayed supporting in the dexter claw a staff erect, thereon hoisted a pennon forked and flowing to the sinister with the lettering 'Per sinum Codanum' - Through the Gulf of Cadonus*.
This magnificent cooler was crafted by the renowned and collectable London silversmith William Bateman II.
Such wine coolers of this design are becoming increasingly difficult to locate.
* This heraldic marking pertains to the Graves-Sawle family, with the motto representing Graves.
Condition
This antique silver William Bateman wine cooler is a superior gauge of silver, exceptional quality and in exceptional condition.
The cast and applied decoration is very sharp and the engraved crest is very crisp.
Full hallmarks struck to the surface of the body are clear in keeping with age and location.
The part hallmarks to liner and cover are all very clear.

The decoration to the body incorporates a large scroll bordered cartouche to either side, each ornamented with a contemporary engraved coat of arms depicting firstly a chevron charged with three lions passant guardant, secondly in chief three cross-crosslet and to the base a lion passant. The surface of the upper portion of each body is plain and embellished with two large applied tied oak leaf wreath cartouches, one side bears the contemporary bright cut engraved coat of arms* depicting a pile engrailed with three cross-crosslet fitchy, all surmounted with the crest displaying a cock's head. The second cartouche on each holder bears the contemporary bright cut engraved presentation inscription 'Given to William Rigden, In Remembrance of William Galdork, by W.H.B'. This magnificent antique William III Britannia silver tankard has a plain tapering cylindrical form onto a spreading collet style foot. The surface of this 18th century quart tankard is embellished with an impressive engraved leaf and floral bordered coat of arms depicting party per pale to the first a chevron between three lion's heads erased and to the second a bend raguly. The upper and lower portions of the body are encircled with bands of tooled decoration, with an applied moulded border to the upper rim. This antique quart tankard retains the original double stepped flat topped, hallmarked cover surmounted with an impressive volute scrolling thumbpiece. The cover is further ornamented with a band of tooled decoration to the rim accented with an applied shaped thumbpiece to the anterior edge. The hinge is decorated with ribbed ornamentation and retains the original pin. This antique Britannia standard silver tankard is fitted with an S-scroll handle ornamented with a plain rounded terminal. The spreading collet foot is encircled with a band of applied moulded decoration to the rim. Imperial quart = 2 pints/1.14 litres. Britannia silver - The Britannia silver standard of 958 (95.84% of fine silver), denoted by the icon of the seated Britannia holding an oval shield, was introduced by William III in 1697. This was to indicate the slightly higher standard of silver from sterling silver standard of 925 (92.5% of fine silver). The armourial bearings are those of the Wyndham and Penruddocke family, to commemorate the marriage of Henry Wyndham and Arundel Penruddocke on 11th September 1735.
