Georgian Ale or Wine Drinking Glass Hand-blown Cotton Twist Stem, English c 1765

About the Item

This is a good handblown, English, mid-Georgian, Ale drinking glass with a double series opaque twist (DSOT) stem, dating from the middle of the 18th century, circa 1765. These tall ale glasses are now used as Wine flutes. These glasses are very collectible. It is made from English lead glass which is relatively heavy and has a soft grey color, with age related wear to both the rim of the bowl and to the foot rim as expected with over 200 years of use. The glass has the usual striations, inclusions and tiny air bubbles you would expect to see in 18th century glass, which gives these glasses their unique charm, and makes every glass different. The glass has a tall round funnel (RF) bowl which sits on a double series opaque or cotton twist stem consisting of a pair of heavy spiral threads wound around a central lace gauze. The stem leads to a good very wide conical foot having a rough snapped off pontil mark to the underside. There are no chips, cracks or any evidence of restoration. Dimensions: Bowl rim diameter: 2.2 inches. Foot diameter: 3.0 inches. Height: 6.94 inches. The glass has a good ring to it when tapped with a finger. ******************************* FREE GLOBAL SHIPPING *********************************
