Mid Century Silver Plated Fish Bottle Opener, Los Castillo, Mexico, 1960s

About the Item

An eccentric silver plated articulated fish bottle opener attributed to Los Castillo and made in Taxco, Mexico, c. 1960. This bottle opener is a marvellous and functional piece in excellent original condition. The articulated body of the fish has a fluid movement while the head is solid and firm for opening bottles. It is composed of ten segments with lovely stylised design. It also has iridescent eyes and great character. This is a classic and very recognisable model by Los Castillo, almost an emblematic example. The design was so popular that it was eventually commercialised by Gucci. Although unsigned, it can stand upright on its tail fin, often considered a test of whether the piece was made by Los Castillo and is of the quality corresponding to their ingenuity and craftsmanship. A dynamic, very decorative and highly collectible piece of mid century vintage barware.
