Rare Mid-19th Century Gaudy Welsh Pottery Bottle Stopper and Corks, circa 1840
This is a hand painted Gaudy Welsh pottery bottle stopper and fitted cork dating to the mid-19th century, circa 1840. Early ceramic bottle stoppers are rare. This stopper is made of pottery, possibly ironstone and has a nice tactile shape. The stopper has a threaded end over which a cork is fitted. The stopper is hand painted in a typical Gaudy Welsh style in cobalt blue and burnt orange in various shades, with hand gilding highlights applied over-glaze. The piece could have been made by one of the Welsh potteries but many Staffordshire potteries made Gaudy Welsh items and there are no makers marks that we can find to verify either way. We date this piece to the first half of the 19th century, circa 1840. The corks are new with holes in the centre and two spare corks are supplied. The cork needs a hole diameter of about 0.5 inch to screw over the pottery end thread section, which then provides a tight and secure fit on the stopper. This then provides a good fit in a standard wine bottle as shown in the images. This is a very decorative and rare item.
