H & R Daniel Rectangular Dish, Shrewsbury Shape, Red Dahlia, Regency ca 1827
Located in London, GB
This is a stunning serving dish made by H&R Daniel in about 1827. It is made in the popular Shrewsbury shape and has a beautiful red dahlia in the centre. This dish would have belonged to a large dessert service. We have several items of this service for sale, please see second picture and separate listings. The H & R Daniel porcelain factory was founded by Henry Daniel, son of a family of master colour makers. He headed up the decoration department in the famous Spode factory where he oversaw all the beautiful early Spode decorations. In 1822 he opened his own factory with his son Richard, creating a truly iconic body of work with the most subtle colours and beautifully painted flowers and landscapes. The Daniel factory was the last true cottage industry among the English potteries, resisting the increase of industrialisation and mass production. This resulted in extraordinary and unrivalled quality, but it probably also led to the factory having to close its doors in 1846 because it could no longer compete with others who did modernise. Daniel porcelain can be hard to identify as the factory was only around for about two decades, and Daniel items have therefore become true collectors' items. This dish is potted in the Shrewsbury Shape, which was first designed in 1826 for the Earl of Shrewsbury...

2 Antique 19th Century English Samuel Alcock Blue Gold Floral Cups & Saucers
Located in Dayton, OH
"Four piece set of antique mid 19th century Samuel Alcock porcelain tea / coffee cups and saucers featuring turquoise blue with florals and gold gilding. Samuel Alcock (1799–1848) was a leading pottery manufacturer who operated as Samuel Alcock & Co in Burslem, Staffordshire from 1828 to 1859. They were especially noted for ""picture jugs"" modelled and moulded in relief in various ceramic materials, a popular type of object in these years. Samuel Alcock & Co. Alcock was born in Kingsley, Staffordshire. He was the youngest of the nine children of Thomas (1746–1816) and Catherine Alcock (1756–1838). Though from a farming background, he developed an interest in commerce after working with his uncle Joseph Locker, a grocer, tea dealer, provision dealer, chandler and banker of the Market Square, Hanley. His introduction to pottery came when he embarked upon a partnership with Ralph Stevenson of Cobridge, Staffordshire. In 1828, Alcock developed his own business and began work on the Hill Top site in Cobridge. By the 1830s Stevenson employed 600 people at his works. In 1839 he completed work on a large factory, built in the Venetian style, on the junction of Westport Road and Greenhead Street. In November of that year a party to celebrate the opening was held at the George Hotel...

Spode Felspar Porcelain Sucrier, White, Gilt and Pink Harebells, circa 1828
Located in London, GB
This is a beautiful lidded sucrier made by Spode in or shortly after 1828. The sucrier is made in Felspar porcelain and has a beautifully moulded shape with a crown-like shaped finial. It is decorated in a pink and gilt harebell pattern. Spode was the great pioneer among the Georgian potters in England. Around the year 1800 he perfected the bone china recipe that has been used by British potters ever since, and he was also the leading potter behind the technique of transferware, making it possible for English potters to replace the Chinese export china, which had come to an end around that time, with their own designs. This was fundamental to a thriving industry that would last for about 150 years and provide half the world with their tableware. Spode porcelain is regarded as one of the highest quality porcelains around; for a soft-paste porcelain it is surprisingly hard and fine, and has a wonderful bright white colour. This sucrier was potted in "Felspar" porcelain, which was a new recipe that Spode brought out in the early 1820s. Felspar porcelain is a little heavier than the normal bone china, but it is as strong and beautiful, and as it doesn't chip as easily it was very popular for tablewear. This sucrier is in a beautifully moulded shape that is clearly influenced by the Rococo Revival style, which became very fashionable around this time. On top of the cover sits a finial that looks like a crown; the handles are ribbon-like and there is surface moulding on the nicely plied body. The decoration consists of a white ground with a beautiful gilt and pink harebell pattern The sucrier has the puce printed "Spode Felspar Porcelain...
