French Green Cut-Glass Epergne Centrepiece Ormolu

About the Item

This is a beautiful large emerald green cut-glass and ormolu French epergne or centrepiece. It is beautifully complimented with hand-painted enamelled decoration as well as expertly cut-glass and exquisite elaborate gilded ormolu mounts. The craftsmanship is second to none throughout all aspects of this piece and it is sure to add an unparalleled touch of class to any Fine dining experience. Dimensions in cm: Height 73 x width 60 x depth 41 Dimensions in inches: Height 2 feet, 5 inches x width 2 feet x depth 1 foot, 4 inches Epergne is a type of table centerpiece, usually made of silver, but may be made of any metal or glass or porcelain. An epergne generally has a large central "bowl" or basket sitting on three to five feet. From this center "bowl" radiate branches supporting small baskets, dishes, or candleholders. There may be between two and seven branches. Epergnes were traditionally made from silver, however from around the start of the 20th century glass was also employed. Green is considered the traditional colour of Islam. The Arabic word for "greenness" is mentioned several times in the Quran, describing the state of the inhabitants of paradise. Ormolu (from French 'or moulu', signifying ground or pounded gold) is an 18th-century English term for applying finely ground, high-carat gold in a mercury amalgam to an object of bronze.The mercury is driven off in a kiln leaving behind a gold-coloured veneer known as 'gilt bronze'. The manufacture of true ormolu employs a process known as mercury-gilding or fire-gilding, in which a solution of nitrate of mercury is applied to a piece of copper, brass, or bronze, followed by the application of an amalgam of gold and mercury. The item was then exposed to extreme heat until the mercury burned off and the gold remained, adhered to the metal object. No true ormolu was produced in France after circa 1830 because legislation had outlawed the use of mercury. Therefore, other techniques were used instead but nothing surpasses the original mercury-firing ormolu method for sheer beauty and richness of colour. Electroplating is the most common modern technique. Ormolu techniques are essentially the same as those used on silver, to produce silver-gilt (also known as vermeil).
