MODERN STYLE

The late 19th and early 20th centuries saw sweeping social change and major scientific advances — both of which contributed to a new aesthetic: modernism. Rejecting the rigidity of Victorian artistic conventions, modernists sought a new means of expression. References to the natural world and ornate classical embellishments gave way to the sleek simplicity of the Machine Age. Architect Philip Johnson characterized the hallmarks of modernism as “machine-like simplicity, smoothness or surface [and] avoidance of ornament.”

Early practitioners of modernist design include the De Stijl (“The Style”) group, founded in the Netherlands in 1917, and the Bauhaus School, founded two years later in Germany.

Followers of both groups produced sleek, spare designs — many of which became icons of daily life in the 20th century. The modernists rejected both natural and historical references and relied primarily on industrial materials such as metal, glass, plywood, and, later, plastics. While Bauhaus principals Marcel Breuer and Ludwig Mies van der Rohe created furniture from mass-produced, chrome-plated steel, American visionaries like Charles and Ray Eames worked in materials as novel as molded plywood and fiberglass. Today, Breuer’s Wassily chair, Mies van der Rohe’s Barcelona chaircrafted with his romantic partner, designer Lilly Reich — and the Eames lounge chair are emblems of progressive design and vintage originals are prized cornerstones of collections.

It’s difficult to overstate the influence that modernism continues to wield over designers and architects — and equally difficult to overstate how revolutionary it was when it first appeared a century ago. But because modernist furniture designs are so simple, they can blend in seamlessly with just about any type of décor. Don’t overlook them.

Danese Milano Putrella Centrepiece in Transparent Coated Iron by Enzo Mari
Located in Hicksville, NY
Putrella is a table centrepiece made from a semi-finished industrial product. Its archetypal form and expressive force is a prime example of Enzo Mari’s work. The piece is made of iron with transparent varnish and is produced in a limited edition of 100 pieces per year. Enzo Mari is one of the masters of Italian Design. He was born in Novara in 1932 and now lives in Milan where he first moved to train as an artist. His work ranges from design to painting, from graphics to installation design. He has been both a university lecturer and a political activist. His characteristic style with its minimal forms and consistent use of materials is considered fundamental to the history of Italian design and the development of its role on the world stage. Mari worked with Danese Milano during a strong period of growth for the company and this allowed him to experiment with techniques, create installations, sculptures and products that became true milestones in the history of Italian design. Wood-Fired Ceramic Vase by Paul Chaleff
Located in Atlanta, GA
A stoneware vase by Paul Chaleff (1947-) made in 1984. Chaleff is known for his wood fired ceramic vessel without glaze or sometimes natural ash glaze. The vase on offer is of a highly geometrical form with handcut multifaceted lower body that rises and morphs into a rounded upper body with two hand-molded ears above the shoulder. The surface shows nice firing color variations due to the iron oxidation in the kiln and also carved lines left intentionally by the artist. It is marked with the artist's incised signature and date 84. This piece has a very strong Japanese wabi-sabi appeal which is the aesthetic influence of the artist's work and makes a visually arresting center piece for any interior. "Paul Chaleff is known for his large-scale wood fired ceramic sculptures and vessels. He also created a large body of wheel thrown functional vessels. His vessels are strongly influenced by Japanese pottery, especially the work of one of Japan’s National Living Treasures, Takeshi Nakazato. Chaleff was one of the first American potters using a Japanese style Anagama kiln and became a leader in the introduction of this form of wood-burning kiln. In 1989, he began a regular collaboration with the British sculptor Sir Anthony Caro. Over a period of thirteen years, they created nearly 50 works, both figurative and abstract. Caro’s sculpture has had direct influence on Chaleff’s work as has the sculpture of Isamu Noguchi, and the ceramics of John Mason...

Danese Milano Oh Signore Fruit Bowl in Iron by Ron Gilad
Located in Hicksville, NY
Oh Signore! Is a table centrepiece. The symbol of the cross is reworked and reinterpreted by assembling pieces of an iron beam to form the shape of a cross. Ron Gilad is an Israeli designer who was born in Tel Aviv in 1972. He is fascinated by the philosophy of everyday objects. Although his design process itself is rigorous, his playful and emotional approach captures a sense of the absurd, explores the theme of disproportions and reflects his penchant for ironically challenging the preconceived meanings of things. Ron Gilad’s mission as artistic director of Danese Milano is to bring classic forms up to date and to reinterpret often overlooked household items to give them a whole new lease of life. Additional Information: Materials: Transparent coated...
