WMF Art Nouveau Jugendstil Silver Plate Card Tray, Germany, c. 1910

About the Item

A beautiful art nouveau Jugendstil silver plate card tray of a nymph holding a dove, made by WMF in Germany c. 1910. This is one of the most iconic pieces of WMF metalware, designed by Albert Mayer who was head of WMF’s studios at the end of the 19th century and up to 1914. The nymph cradles a dove in her hands and stands before two large spreading water lily leaves that act as the card tray, supported by sweeping stems that flow down into a flared base. The piece is stamped to the base with ‘B’ (for Britannia metal), the WMF ostrich mark, I/O (indicating silver plating) and ‘OX’, designating that the original finish was aged or antique silver, an intentionally darker finish which the piece retains. It is also marked ‘246’, related to the model number. This piece features on the front cover of both the 1998 and the 2012 edition of “Art Nouveau Domestic Metalwork: From Wurttembergische Metallwaren Fabrik, 1906”, published by Antique Collectors Club. It also features on page 167 of the same publication. The piece is in original, untouched condition and so there is naturally a little wear to some of the silvering – please see images. It only lends character to this most desirable and iconic example of WMF sculpture.
