About the Item
Antique Majolica ceramic cheese keeper by George Jones
English, circa 1870
Measures: Height 30cm, width 23cm, depth 23cm
This delightful cheese keeper (or cover) was created by the important ceramic manufacturer, George Jones (English, circa 1861-1951). Based in Stoke-on-Trent in Staffordshire, George Jones specialized in the production of fine majolica (tin-glazed earthenware). George Jones goods are characterized by their use of natural motifs and colors, and skillfully modelled flora and fauna. In their style and execution, George Jones majolica wares rival those produced by Minton and Wedgewood.
The cheese keeper features a dome shaped body, which is topped by a handle, and a conforming stand. The handle is designed in the image of a branch, bound together by a wicker strap. The branch sprouts beautiful light pink plum blossom flowers and green foliage, which fall across the body of the piece. The cheese keeper is covered with a cobalt blue glaze, and its middle is encircled by a wide band which imitates a woven wicker basket.
