Sculptural Stoneware Large Serving Bowl or Low Centerpiece

About the Item

This elegantly sculptural slip-cast stoneware vessel by San Francisco-based ceramicist Dana Harel is inspired by natural pools and water wells. The hand-carved, unglazed exterior compliments the smooth interior surface, which is finished in a clear, food-safe glaze, making this piece suitable for everyday use as a large serving bowl or platter. With an architectural but naturalistic quality, the surface details suggest both ancient geological landscapes and early man-made forms. The low-lying piece is deceptively voluminous, a shapely and functional work of collectible design. Artist Information: Dana Harel was born and raised in Tel Aviv, Israel and currently works in San Francisco. She is an artist and trained architect, and the founder of WHITE DIRT, through which she produces limited-edition functional objects derived from her unique sculptural forms. Dana's work examines the human psyche and body, our relationship to built and natural environments, and contrasting characteristics. She creates her work using a process that combines photography, image transfer, drawing, painting and sculpting techniques, seeking to capture imperfect, in-between moments in form. Dana has presented her drawings, sculptures and installations in solo exhibitions at Laguna Art Museum, Palo Alto Art Center, Gallery Wendi Norris, and Herzliya Museum of Contemporary Art. Her work has been included in numerous local group exhibitions at venues such as Equinom Gallery, San Francisco Arts Commission, Headlands Center for the Arts, San Jose Institute of Contemporary Art, and Napa Valley Museum. Her work has been reviewed in The New York Times, ARTnews, Art Practical, and San Francisco Bay Guardian. Dana received her Bachelor of Architecture degree from California College of the Arts in San Francisco, CA.
