Bernard Leach Rare Early Running Deer Glazed Tile, circa 1930

About the Item

A rare glazed hand crafted studio pottery tile decorated with a running deer by renowned English potter Bernard Leach CBE (British, 1887-1979) and made at the Leach Pottery in St Ives, Cornwall and dating from around 1930. The stoneware tile is thickly potted of small square shape, the front glazed and hand decorated with a deer running in a stylized landscape decorated in brown on a cream glazed ground. The tile has painted Leach Pottery and BL monogram for Bernard Leach applied to the lower edge within the design. The rear of the tile is unglazed and formed in four sections each with a clear impressed Leach Pottery mark. Provenance: Acquired from the estate of Richard Batterham who was based at the Leach Pottery as an apprentice from 1957 and acquired several pottery items from Bernard Leach and other potters operating there at the time. Thence consigned by a gentleman owner and collector. In presentable condition with a small area of glaze loss to the face of the deer. Nonetheless a rare example.
