Early Davenport Ironstone Small Hydra Jug Jardiniere Pattern, English circa 1815

About

This is a good small Hydra jug, pitcher or cream jug made by the Davenport Company of Longport, Staffordshire, England in the late Georgian period, circa 1805-1820, made of Ironstone pottery, which Davenport called Stone China. This is a very small jug of only 3.5 inches high. These jugs vary in height from the very small like this one to much larger (over 10 inches high), the very small and very large ones being rarer and more sought after. It is hand decorated in a bold Imari pattern called jardinière which is one of their very decorative chinoiserie designs that was also used by Mason's Ironstone. An identical Davenport jug is illustrated in Godden's Guide to Ironstone, a reference book by Geoffrey A. Godden, Published by The Antique Collectors Club, page 230, Plate 178. Davenport jugs and pitchers are generally of higher quality than Mason's Ironstone and have heavily gilded detail, with finer hand painting. The jug has the blue Davenport Stone China printed anchor mark to the base as used by them between 1805 and 1820, with an impressed 00 which is probably the size code.
