Sculptured Female Head made in excellent style of Expressionism, designed by Vally Wieselthier (1895-1945) made circa 1928 red earthenware, multicolored painted and glazed (= colored via on-glaze paints) It is a sculptured female head attached to round flat base having appearance of a scarf / shawl. Inclined headgear (= head covering / headwear) existing. Excellent modelling in special expressionism which is typical for Wieselthier. Please note: There had been made only three sculptured heads based on this model in year 1928 - therefore this item is VERY RARE ! (Bibliography: Exhibition Catalogue Expressive Keramik der Wiener Werkstätte 1917 - 30 (= Expressionist Ceramics of Wiener Werkstaette), published by Bayerischer Vereinsbank, Munich 1992, Catalogue Number 83 on page 108 and page XVIII) Impressed mark on reverse side: WW, model number 513 and 'Made in Austria' Size: height: 15.0 cm (= 5.90 inches) diameter: 8.5 cm (= 3.34 inches) Designer and sculptor: Vally Wieselthier (1895-1945) was an Austrian ceramics artist who lived as from the year 1932 in USA / New York. After having studied textile arts and painting at School of Applied Arts in Vienna, she began study of architecture, taught by Viennese famous architect Josef Hoffmann / contemporary with this, Vally Wieselthier collaborated with Michael Powolny - the well-known Viennese ceramics artist - in order to receive intensive experiences in sculpture. Wieselthier founded her own ceramics manufactory in Vienna in year 1922, supplying the Wiener Werkstätte with her works of art: Her manufactory was sold to Wiener Werkstätte in year 1927 then. - Wieselthier organized exhibition of her own works of ceramics in New York in year 1928; having had much success in USA, she moved definitely to New York in year 1932 where she died 1945.
