George 111rd Derby Coffee Can Hand-Painted Named View Near Edmonton, Ca 1810

About

This is a highly collectable porcelain Coffee Can or cup with a hand painted scene called "Near Edmonton" and made by Derby Porcelain Co., England in the George III, period, circa 1810. The coffee can is straight sided with Derby's wishbone handle. The can is beautifully hand-painted with a picturesque named landscape scene; "Near Edmonton" This shows a country scene with two figures walking over a bridge to a cottage from a wooded area with a tall over hanging tree to the left foreground. The scene is enclosed in an oval panel on the front of the can with the remaining decoration being a richly hand gilded shell and floral scrolls pattern set in a cobalt blue ground. There is further gilded decoration on a deep border to the inside of the can and also to the handle. Derby employed many painters and gilders and similar landscape scenes were painted by John Brewer and George Robertson. The reference book; Derby Porcelain by John Twitchett shows good examples of pieces by both painters and a plate with similar gilding and a landscape scene by Brewer is shown in colour plate 24 on page 61. The can is hand marked to the base with the Derby Crown, crossed batons, dots and D in red with Near Edmonton inscribed above, all in iron red.
