Georgian Ironstone Platter or Drainer Plate by Hicks Meigh & Johnson, Circa 1830
About the Item
This is a good rounded oval ironstone (stone china) drainer plate, Circa 1830, which we attribute to the factory of Hicks, Meigh and Johnson of Shelton, Staffordshire Potteries, England, who made good quality earthenware and ironstone wares between 1822 and 1835, .
Ironstone drainers and strainers tend to be fairly rare.
This attractive piece has good central chinoiserie pattern with a large peony and flowering cherry growing from a rocky outcrop, with a butterfly in flight above the large orange flower and a floral outer border pattern. The patterns are hand enamelled in colors of burnt orange, yellow, blue, green and pink over an under-glaze printed outline.
The piece is fully marked to the base with a printed mark showing a crown above a ribbon having the words real stone China and also bears the pattern number 209 hand written in red below the ribbon.
