Giovanni de Simone "Fruit Peddler" Hand-Painted Bowl and Plate Set

About the Item

Giovanni de Simone "Fruit Peddler" Bowl and Plate Set This mid-century modern bowl and plate set was created by famed Italian artist Giovanni de Simone circa 1965. Both pieces are handmade of glazed ceramic, hand-painted and signed. The bright and colorful plate depicts a portrait of a man carrying a box of fruit high above his head, while the matching bowl features a similar portrait of a woman. The vibrant colors--orange, yellow, gold and red--and the large eyes are reminiscent of Roman mosaics of ancient frescoes. These pieces are simple, fun, and playful. They were only used for display and are in excellent condition, with little to no wear. The underside of the bowl and plate are both marked "Desimone Italy 65." Giovanni de Simone (1930-1991) was an Italian ceramicist who opened his studio in Palermo, Sicily soon after the end of World War ll. He studied for many years with Pablo Picasso. It is easy to see Picasso's influence in his work, and this set is no exception. De Simone's work is highly sought after by collectors. Measurements are as follows: Plate is 10" in diameter x 1" in depth Bowl is 6.5" is diameter x 3" in depth
