Goldscheider Vienna gorgeous rare figurine: Mephisto / Devil Designed by Josef Lorenzl (1892-1950) / one of the most important designers having been active for Goldscheider manufactory in period of 1920 - 1940 / DESIGNED 1925/26 (= QUITE EARLY !) . made, circa 1930 model number 5537 / 143 / 8 Hallmarked: Goldscheider Wien (= Vienna) stamp mark plus following inscriptions: Made in Austria and hand decorated // painter's and modeller's signs visible, too. Subject: Stunning Male Figurine / It Is The Devil Called Mephisto: It is the Name of Devil who acts in the tragedy written by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe (18th century): The drama created by Goethe is based on the historical Johann Georg Faust — who wagers his soul with the Devil. Mephistopheles is not only a speaker for the Devil, but he is also seen as a possible lover to the character. [Wikipedia] This figurine is of highest quality due to the excellent painting and modelling causing the figurine's Fine as well as lifelike appearance: The bearded Mephistopheles is wearing a mantel, a jacket with bloomers, stockings and elegant shoes. The Devil is looking like very thoughtfully / probably he is going to plan something. The figurine is based on black oblong socle which has a backrest.
