About the Item
Vintage set of 4 tea cups and 4 saucers (2 sets available) features “S” model forms designed by Ulla Procopé and Kosmos decor in brown colorway, designed by Gunvor Olin-Grönqvist. Kosmos was in production from 1962 to 1976. The parallel vertical stripes in shades espresso and mocha brown are placed on green background; as all hand painted decors, Kosmos displays variation in color placements within the set. The rims of the saucers are accentuated with wide espresso brown bands.
The decor is hand painted on the same “S” model forms as was Ruska, Anemone, and Rosmarine lines. "S" model stoneware is tough, durable, and ovenproof, keeping with "oven to table" trend of the time. Hand-painted pieces offer variations in intensity of color, with wide range of dark and light hues; each hand painted item differs a bit from one to the other, creating a spontaneous, organic tablescape in nature-inspired brown and green palette.
The pieces are marked on the bottoms with "Kosmos" ARABIA Made in Finland, GOG (initials of the designer), and model numbers (6-66 for cups and 4-67 for saucers). We are offering tea service set for 4 with teapot, coffee service set for 6 with coffee pot and a set of serving bowl and platter in separate listings in Rosmarin on the same "S" model forms, that will complement the Kosmos service while providing some pattern variation.
Sculptural, classic Scandinavian Modern set with elegant form, high quality craftsmanship, and statement piece presence will make a perfect display accent or enhance tablescapes, blending seamlessly with wide range of interiors, from Traditional to Modernist, Transitional, Organic Modern, Scandinavian Modern, Organic Modern, Japandi, Collected, or Contemporary.
Gunvor Olin-Grönqvist (1928–2005) was one of Finland’s leading ceramic artists in the 20th century. She studied to be a porcelain painter at the Institute of Industrial Art in 1948-1951; Gunvor worked for the Arabia factory for her whole professional career, from 1951 to 1992, working in the Applied Art and Art Departments, and Industrial Design Department. She designed several models and decoration types for mass production, including Valpuri, Fructus, Kosmos, Soraya, and Noah's Ark. Her typical methods of decoration were raw painting, colour glazes, and engraving. The decoration types consisted of stylized animal, fruit, and plant motifs with fairy-tale themes on porcelain, faience, and stoneware forms. Gunvor’s work is represented at the numerous museums in the Nordic countries.
Ulla (Ulrika) Procopé (1921-1968) worked in Arabia Finland art department at the same time as Kaj Franc, Kaarine Aho, and Goran Back. She trained with Olga Osol in the hand painting department at Arabia after graduating as a ceramicist from the Central School of Arts & Crafts in Helsinki. Ulla worked for the Arabia factory for 20 years, from 1948 to 1967; she was a skilled wheel thrower and a talented designer of well known classic Scandinavian design tableware series, such as Ruska, Anemone, Tutti Frutti, and Valencia. During her career, Ulla Procopé participated in numerous exhibitions of design in Finland and abroad.

Roman Erlikh is a professional woodworker with over 20 years’ experience. Roman Erlikh Studio creates bespoke and limited edition contemporary furniture and art objects. His first furniture collections were inspired by traditional Art Deco and Biedermeier styles interpreted through a modern lifestyle demands. Stepping away from merely utilitarian view of everyday objects, his recent collections are filled with meaningful textual context while incorporating traditional and modern woodworking techniques. Roman is using practical function as a common denominator to create emotionally charged art objects, blurring the boundary between art and function. While appreciating possibilities of ordinary materials, Roman is developing new mixed media multilayered composite varnishes and utilizes decorative gilding and mica veneer to actively engage ambient light, giving an additional aspect to relation of his objects to their environment. The decision to work in custom format was based on environmental concerns and opposition to culture of mass production and pure consumerism. The choice of materials was heavily influenced by sustainability and environmental concerns. All objects are made locally in the Brooklyn Navy Yard workshop. Elimination of storage and transportation needs for mass-produced furniture in lieu of creating a custom made objects on demand allows us to reduce waste of materials and energy.
