Handbuilt Ceramic Sculpture, Reclining Skeletal Spine in Mottled White

About

"Reclining Rachis", in a Mottled white glaze, is part of an ongoing series investigating the spine. It is hand formed and fired twice, using a dark stoneware clay body with a matte white glaze. The interaction between the glaze and the clay reveals the iron deposits in the clay showing through the surface. Since it is hand-formed, it is a completely unique piece, no two will ever be exactly alike. As with much of my work, it has a variable, interactive component, that is it can recline or stand on edge, as please. Photos show various positions.

Helena Starcevic Ceramics

Helena Starcevic Ceramics

View Profile
Helena Starcevic Ceramics produces work that straddles the line between fine and decorative art. Each piece is one of a kind, hand-built entirely by the artist in her New York studio.   Taking inspiration from the natural world, Ms. Starcevic's work includes references to the stark beauty of the desert, prehistoric cave paintings, and the human form (within and without). Everything is filtered through Ms. Starcevic’s own singular aesthetic, at once quiet yet strong, meditative, and beautiful. Pieces are made in different clays and finishes, and at different scales. Groupings are available. Helena Starcevic’s ceramic pieces are held in private collections across the US and Europe. She has held numerous residencies including one at the Museum of Art and Design in New York City.
