Large Delft Blue and White Charger with Landscape, Netherlands, circa 1660

Large Blue and white charger with landscape The Netherlands, circa 1660 The charger has a wide, spreading flange and is painted in blue with a landscape in a double circle. The well is unpainted. The border is painted with striped segments and ox-head ornaments. Three stilt marks, which are characteristic for majolica, are visible in the centre. Dimensions: diameter 35,5 cm / 13.97 in. Similar examples: Two blue and white majolica dishes with similar landscapes have been excavated in Amsterdam from cesspits at Haarlemmerplein and Zwanenburgerstraat. Both are dated to the third quarter of the seventeenth century Dutch landscapes were depicted on tin-glazed pottery from the second quarter of the seventeenth century onwards: on majolica porridge bowls and dishes, and on faience plates, dishes and lobed dishes. Condition: This large and beautiful charger is in very good condition, especially considering its age of over 350 years. There are the usual rim chips.
