1980s Dansk Denmark Brown Mist Covered Casserole Serving Dish by Niels Refsgaard
By Dansk
Located in Atlanta, GA
A vintage lidded casserole serving dish in Brown Mist by Niels Refsgaard for Dansk. You may know Dansk, if not don't worry I'll get to them later. For now, let's look at who Niels Refsgaard is. From a Dansk catalog, "Niels Refsgaard has been an integral part of the Dansk story for more than 60 years as a designer, creator, and brand champion. Niels prefers to be called a “simple country potter” and it is his amazing talent and devotion to his Craft that shines through in all that he creates. We can’t think of a design collaboration between brand and craftsman that has stood the test of time the way the Dansk and Refsgaard marriage has. That longevity has yielded much success along the way, as evidenced by the fact that so many of Niels’ dinnerware patterns are still active in the Dansk line today. We like to think of Niels as one of Mid-Century Modern’s ceramic masters, and as this design theme is enjoying renewed attention in the last several years we have not only re-issued some of Niels’ early work, we’ve commissioned him to develop a new approach to the casual dining experience." And now, let's look at the 'brown mist' design - Dansk Brown...

Mid-Century Modernist Hand Painted Ceramic Vase, Signed Thor
Located in New York, NY
This refined Mid Century Modern ceramic vase was realized by the esteemed maker Thor in Denmark circa 1960. It offers a cylindrical body, and dramatically sloped shoulders that curve upwards to a truncated neck and round mouth- all in a beautiful ecru hue. The body of the piece has been meticulously hand painted with a diamond motif- at points clustered, and at others represented as floating individuals diamonds- in a surprising and sophisticated tones of marigold, persimmon, chocolate and white. The grain of the ceramic substrate beneath shows through the glaze imbuing it with a sumptuous texture. With its clean modernist lines and elegant color palate, this piece embodies the qualities that discerning collectors of first rate Scandinavian Mid Century ceramics...
