Pair of Art Nouveau Vases, 'Amphora' by Julius Dressler, Vienna, circa 1905

About

An eye-catching and unusual matching pair of Art Nouveau vases. Made in Vienna in the first flush of Julius Dressler's breakthrough. These earthenware vases have blue and green enamel glazes illustrating foliage in Art Nouveau style, presented on an earthy brown base. The bisected handles are integrated with the central cyclindrical vessel through a centralplateau. This pair is quite large, and particularly unusual because of the double handles around the central vessel. (Similar examples are known with a single handle.) Julius Dressler's factory opened in Biela, Bohemia in 1883 and enjoyed acclaim in its early production through to 1910. After conglomeration into the EPIAG, the studio closed in 1944. Dressler's work was influenced by both the Arts & Crafts and Vienna Secessionist movements, and ealier (and later) work was in a range of styles, but he remained most famous for these first stylish Art Nouveau pieces. Stamped by the factory on the base with a decorator's number in black.
