Pair of Red Armorial Dishes, Nunquam Obliviscar 'I Shall Never Forget'

About the Item

A wonderful pair of armorial dishes painted in red with the Marital Arms of Simpson and Hopper. Made by the factory of Neale & Company dating to circa 1780 the armorial bearings as depicted upon this George III earthenware dish are those of the family of Simpson impaling Hopper each with a scheme of quarterings. These armorial bearings denote the marshalling of a marital coat showing the arms of the husband and the arms of the wife. Motto: Nunquam obliviscar [I shall never forget] (for Simpson). These armorial bearings commemorate the marriage of Valentine Simpson (baptised 9th April 1747 died 20th August 1832) and Sarah Hopper (baptised 14th June 1753 buried 16th March 1853). Given the date of the manufacture of these dishes they undoubtedly at one time formed part of a larger service that was commissioned by Valentine shortly after his marriage to Sarah. Valentine and Sarah were married at Sittingbourne in the County of Kent on the 12th November 1778. Valentine had acquired the Manor of Bobbing near to Sittingbourne in September 1796 from Colonel William Tyndale. It is said that the Simpsons did not take up residence in the principal house, Bobbing Court on his newly acquired estate as the house was already tenanted, but lived at Glover’s House on the edge of the town of Sittingbourne. They certainly lived at Bobbing Court later in their married life. The arms may be blazoned as follows: Crest: An ounce’s head pean erased Gules gorged with a collar gemel argent (for Simpson) Arms: (on the dexter) Quarterly 1st and 4th Per bend sinister indented ermines and sable a lion rampant counterchanged on a canton gules a covered cup argent (for Simpson) 2nd Argent a chevron gules between three cock pheasants’ heads couped azure (for Pettit) and 3rd Argent on a fess dancetty gules between three torteaux a fleur-de-lis or (for Pilcher) (on the sinister) Quarterly 1st and 4th Azure a chevron ermine between in chief two pomegranates stalked and leaved and in base a Catherine wheel or (for Hopper) 2nd Argent a chevron gules between three cock pheasants’ heads couped azure (for Pettit) and 3rd Argent on a fess dancetty gules between three torteaux a fleur-de-lis or (for Pilcher). The dishes measure 8.25" diameter. Price for the pair $900.
