Stoneware Egg Sculpture Orange/Brown/Green by Hans Hedberg, Biot, France
About the Item
Egg designed by the Swedish ceramicist Hans Hedberg, who lived and worked in Biot, France. This egg is 25 cm (10") high including the stand. It´s in excellent condition and it has a lovely orange/brown/black & green glaze.
Hedberg worked with several famous artists, among Picasso, Léger and Matisse.
Hans started to make the eggs during the 1950s and it was because his grandfather, a traveller and a supreme ornitologist, had gathered an astounding collection of eggs from seabirds. He had travelled all the way too Spitsbergen to find some of them and to add them to his collection.
Hans described the eggs as a perfect shape, synonymous to creation and birth of life on earth. The palette of glazes is endlessly varied, he went from the most neutral nuances, transparent to the most bold and daring.
The years during the 1950s was perhaps the most important period in Hans Hedbergs career. It was a decisive moment which marked the transition from utilitarian to artistic sculptures, and the eggs proved both Hans´s superior skills in creating glazes and his artistic maturity; a premonition of the fruits that were still to come.
