William IVth John Ridgway large ironstone Dinner Plate Pattern 5053, Ca 1835

About the Item

This is a very decorative, Imperial Stone China (ironstone), large Dinner Plate by John Ridgway, dating to the William IVth period of the 19th century. The plate is potted in the Napier shape with a fluted wavy outer rim. The plate has been carefully hand-painted in bold colorful enamels with a central Chinoiserie pattern having four border sprigs to the cavetto. The pattern has hand gilded detail and an outer gilded rim. The pattern number is 5053. John Ridgway operated at his father’s celebrated Cauldon Place works, Shelton, Hanley, England, between 1830-1856, producing some fine porcelain and stone China of excellent quality. His stone china earthenware's and ironstone wares are discussed on page 305 to 309 of Godden's Guide to Ironstone, Stone and Granite Wares written by Geoffrey Godden for the Antique Collectors Club, with a similar plate illustrated on page 307. This piece is fully marked to the base with an "Imperial Stone China" Royal Arms mark incorporating J R in the central garter and carrying the pattern number: 5053:4. We date this piece to the William IV period of the earlier part of the 19th century, circa 1835.

    This is a highly decorative, ironstone, twin handled circular footed Bowl by John Ridgway, dating to the English William 1Vth period, circa 1835 . The bowl has been carefully hand-painted in bold colorful enamels with a chinoiserie pattern of three oriental people travelling on a boat, pattern number 5057. It is also richly hand gilded.     This is a good Mason’s ironstone large dinner plate produced at the time when Mason's was owned and controlled by George L Ashworth and Brothers after the bankruptcy of C J Mason in 1848. This large plate is decorated in a the striking chinoiserie pattern called "Flying Bird" pattern, as illustrated on Page 121 of "A Guide to Mason's Patent Ironstone Patterns" published by The Mason's Collectors' Club. The pattern would have been transfer printed then boldly hand enameled with good detail. The plate also has a mid-brown / ochre hand painted outer rim simulating the Chinese plates of the time and earlier periods. The base carries a blue transfer printed mark Ashworth Brothers...
