The town is located a little over 200 miles away from Paris. King Louis XV authorized Louis de Montmorency-Laval, the Bishop of Metz, to establish a glassworks in Baccarat. The production that ensued consisted of mirrors, stemware, and window panes until 1816, when the first crystal oven went into operation. By that time, there was over 3,000 workers employed. In 1814 Baccarat introduced the Harcourt service. The Classic, timeless shape was an international bestseller. This innovative new cut magnified the light in the crystal. In 1823, Baccarat received its first royal commission by King Louis XVIII. Afterwards, Baccarat received many royal commissions throughout the world. In 1827, Baccarat became the first French crystal manufacturer to exhibit chandeliers. Baccarat Crystal received a gold metal in the National Exhibition of Industrial Products when they became the first glassworks in France to create colored crystal in 1839. They remain today a leader in this art, particularly for the invention of the famous gold ruby red and opaline colors. .
