About the Item
Blue and white DUYNKERKER tobacco jar
Delft, 1760-1780
The ovoid tobacco jar with copper lid has a groove on the shoulder at the top and a protruding rim. The jar is painted in blue with a cartouche containing the inscription DUYNKERKER. The cartouche consists at the bottom of bales of tobacco and wooden barrels, on both sides and at the top are S-volutes, shells, flowers, leaves and foliate branches.
The Netherlands imported large quantities of tobacco in the 18th century, which was processed here for consumption. Amsterdam in particular was an important centre in the tobacco trade. The large tobacco jars were displayed in tobacco shops where their customers could choose from many different tobacco varieties. The type of tobacco or place of origin are often indicated on the tobacco jars. This pot contained processed tobacco from Dunkirk that came from Saint Domingue, now Haiti.
