About the Item

We are pleased to offer this French faience polychrome pitcher. In the center rests St. John the Baptist. On the other side of the pitcher is inscribed: "17 - jean - troiont -71" which helps to identify the subject: St. John. He is further identified by his long cross, camel skin cloak and the lamb that stands by his side (the lamb is a symbol of Jesus) , but the painter has not just depicted St. John posing for a picture, but in action. He looks back over his shoulder and gestures to others to follow him. He carries the cross like a military standard with its banner, and he points in the direction that the lamb, a symbol of Jesus is facing. The painting shows St. John in the midst of his life’s work. Around the main scene the pitcher features polychrome painting of decorative floral accents painted in deep blue, golden yellow, sage green, and burnt orange. Dimensions: 9.75 inches depth x 6.75 inches at widest point x 10.25 inches height Condition: Good: On the bottom rim there is a small spot where the glaze has separated. This is likely original from the first firing. The top edge of the spout and the handle have excellent invisible restoration. Price: $460 Background: Faience is the French equivalent to Dutch Delft and Italian maiolica (majolica): it is tin-glazed earthenware that originally sought to imitate Chinese porcelain. However, soon after its introduction to France in the second half of the sixteenth century by Italian immigrants French faience began to use decorative styles relating to European interests. Faience decoration draws inspiration from multiple sources, including Italian ceramics, Asian porcelain, and contemporary engravings.
