A beautiful set of five blue and white Delft vases, this faience collection was hand-painted in Holland, circa 1900. The three bulbous vases are lidded, each with a finial depicting a rampant lion with a ball in its forepaws. Beneath the lion is a mottled background (on the front side only), with a foliate and floral margent. Each vase has the same scene painted on the front of the main body: a couple walking through a field surrounded by flowers. The opposite side has a floral rinceaux above a foliate branch. Painted in a similar fashion, the two concave vases are without lids. The side opposite from the cartouche of the couple has floral margents. All five vases have canted corners on the base. A set of six French faïence transfer printed creamware “assiette parlante” or talking plates, produced by P&H Choisy, Seine, France – circa 1824-1836. Transfer printed in black with six different courting scenes sourced from the lithographs by Jean Gabriel Scheffer (1797-1876). Scheffer was a Swiss school painter and lithographer active in Paris from 1822 to 1846. He produced humorous lithographs illustrating Paris customs and manners. His original 1826-28 lithographs of the scenes that decorate these plates can be found in the Musée Carnevalet collection in Paris. Bordered with an egg and dart rim, an inner border of entwined roses and leaves. They are numbered one to six and inscribed on the front as follows: 1. Il est passé — ai-je eu peur (He passed – I was scared) 2. J’ai trop peur!.. (I’m too afraid!..) 3. …Moi! je n’ai rien avec lui. (…Me! I have nothing with him.) 4. Nous serons comme frere et soeur.
