Botanical Splendor: Derby Porcelain "Marsh Hibiscus" Plate by John Brewer Circa 1815 A finely painted Antique Derby porcelain plate, dating to the Regency period. The plate features a central botanical specimen of the "Marsh Hibiscus" (Hibiscus Moscheutos), superbly painted with large, soft pink petals surrounding a vibrant yellow and red stamen. The painting is attributed to the celebrated artist John Brewer, who based the design directly on an illustration by Sydenham Edwards published in The Botanical Magazine in 1806 (Plate #882). The central image is framed by a rich salmon-ground border, lavishly decorated with gilt motifs. The gilding features elegant swans with wings outstretched, interspersed with stylized flower heads and scrolling foliage, creating a neoclassical frieze of exceptional quality. Markings: Title: The flower is named in script on the reverse: "Marsh Hibiscus". Factory Mark: Painted with the standard red crown, crossed batons, and D mark. Worker's Marks: Numerals 4 & 13 in yellow and green inside the footrim. Measurements: Diameter: 8 7/8 inches (22.5 cm) Condition: Excellent antique condition; gilding is fresh and the salmon ground is evenly applied. Historical Context: The Artist: John Brewer (1764–1816) was the elder of two artist brothers who worked at Derby. Coming from a family of artists, he brought a fluid, watercolorist style to porcelain painting. The Source: This plate is a direct copy of a botanical print from William Curtis's The Botanical Magazine, specifically plate #882 published in 1806. The original illustration was by Sydenham Edwards, one of the magazine's most prolific artists.
