Set of 6 Chinese Export Plates, Roses Blue and White, Qianlong, circa 1780

About the Item

This is a beautiful set of six small plates made in China for export to the West in the late Qianlong era, circa 1780. These plates were made for export to the West, to be precise to the Netherlands, which was a major importer of blue and white porcelain. The plates are very finely potted in blueish glaze. The decoration was executed under the glaze in blue. All plates have a rose in the centre and beautiful Chinese scroll details on the rim. The plates have been gilded and two of the plates still have clearly visible gilt detail, but most of the gilt has been washed off - a sign that the plates have had loving use as there is no damage. The decorations were applied in "flow blue" paint under the glaze. The paint was quite liquid, making the paintings quite rough which gives a charming character. There are two floral details on the underside of each plate. The roses look quite Western, which begs the question whether the artist was copying European roses - there was a lively exchange of styles between China and the West. The plates have a thin ochre rim and are unmarked on the underside. Provenance: from the collection of a Dutch collector, who purchased these in the late 1940s-early 1950s at a local Dutch auction. Condition report: The plates are in excellent condition without any damage or repairs, except some very light nicks off the rims in a few places. The gilt has been mostly washed off but is still faintly visible on some of the plates. Antique porcelain is never perfect. Everything was handwork and kilns were fired on wood or coal, creating a lot of dust and other particles that could get baked into the porcelain by accident. Due to the shrinkage in the kiln, items can have small firing lines, which should not be seen as damage but as an imperfection of the time of production. I will reflect any damage, repairs, obvious stress marks, crazing or heavy wear in the item description but some minor scratches, nicks, stains and gilt disintegration can be normal for vintage items and need to be taken into account. There is widespread confusion on the internet about the difference between chips and nicks, or hairlines and cracks. I will reflect any damage as truthfully as I can, i.e. a nick is a tiny bit of damage smaller than 1mm and a chip is something you can easily see with the eye; a glazing line is a break in the glazing only; hairline is extremely tight and/or superficial and not picked up by the finger; and a crack is obvious both to the eye and the finger.
