Rare Pair of Irish Georgian Cork Glass Company Wine Carafes, Ireland Circa 1800

$3,200per set

About

A rare pair of Irish Georgian Cork Glass Company carafes, both robust mallet shaped bodies engraved with festooned swags interspersed by stylized wheat sheafs tied with bows, rising to feathered triple ring necks. The undersides of the mitre fluted bases bearing moulded makers marks for CORK GLASS CO. (The Cork Glass Company produced wares for a relatively brief period of time, from 1783-1818). No comparative examples of either this form or cutting have been found as yet during research, in addition given that the diameter of the mouths of these vessels are proportionally larger than those that would normally receive stoppers for traditional decanters of this period, this strongly suggests that these were most likely intended as wine carafes, not decanters.
