16th Century French Sandstone Mortar

About

A large 16th century French sandstone mortar. Mortars were used since Antiquity to prepare food, medicines, pigments and cosmetics. In Europe stone and wood were most common up until the 18th century when exotic woods and marble were more commonly used. This big example was probably used for preparing grains and or food ingredients. Possibly it could also have been used outside in a garden setting. It is beautifully weathered and has nice proportions throughout.
