Flemish Salt Glazed Pottery Beer Ewer ft Story of Susanna 1584

About the Item

Very rare flemish pottery beer jug or stein…..depicting the Story of Susanna and dated 1584. The original jug has been attributed to Engel Kran…..a well-known and highly regarded German/Flemish potter. Kran pieces are very very rare and only a few have appeared at Auction ….. selling for VERY high prices. The original Suzanna Jug by Kran is a brown earthenware salt glazed jug and one is in a Museum in Germany. This one is most likely a 18-19th century copy in a blue salt glaze making it extremely rare and highly sought after! It most likely had a pewter lid, which is missing. Provenance: Bought at Auction in Ireland. Susanna jug , Engel Kran, circca 1584-1600 The body of this large pitcher is embellished with scenes from the story of the chaste Susanna. When the beautiful Susanna refused to submit to the dishonourable proposals of two elderly men, they accused her of adultery. However, the young Daniel exposed the two greybeards as liars. The two men suffered a gruesome death.
