Rockford Silver Company Pitcher with Wedding Engraving

About the Item

This silver plated Victorian pitcher features highly stylized floral motifs that seamlessly bend styles from across the centuries and across the continents. It is a perfect example of what is called Victorian eclecticism. What makes this pitcher so special is the engraving to Lina Broom July 23rd 1890 on her 25th Wedding Anniversary. The tradition of giving silver on a couples 25th Wedding Anniversary began in Germany. In Germany friends and relatives would provide the couple with a silver wreath. This pitcher embodies this older tradition with its floral wreath-like engravings and its beautiful silver plating. This kind of silverplate vessle was named "hollowear" by its inventor, James Stimpson, a noted Baltimore inventor. He first received the U.S. patent for a multi-walled ice pitcher on October 17th, 1854. StThis kind of silver plate vessle was named "hollowear" by its inventor, James Stimpson, a noted Baltimore inventor. He first received the U.S. patent for a multi-walled ice pitcher on October 17th, 1854. Stimpsons design was the precursor to the modern thermos or Dewar flask, having a double sided and double bottom configuration, thus keeping the ice water inside insulated. This kept the contents colder longer and minimized condensation in the pre-air-conditioned Victorian household. Ice would last three times as long in the Stimpson design as it would in common pitchers of the times.
