  • 19th Century WR Loftus London English Tavern Two Gallon Copper Measure
    Located in Forney, TX
A monumental Victorian era copper two gallon ale measure made by W. R. Loftus, Oxford Street, London, England. circa 1870 Most impressive large size, hand-crafted in traditional haystack form with a deep lip and pour spout, small neck, broad base, and riveted reinforced handle. The bulbous vessel body inscribed "Two Gallon", stamped with official crown over MW mark to rim interior, signed WR Loftus London. Retaining original antique character and charm throughout, including highly desirable verdigris patina, scattered scuffs, dings, and antique character marks that add to the elegant rustic warmth, rich history, and overall charm. With a largely illiterate population at the time, the interests of every citizen needed to be considered and cared for so stamped and sealed measures were used throughout the British Isles. For example, in 1309 it was decreed “The Standard of bushels, gallIons and ells shalI be sealed with an iron seal...
