Chop Platter with Strainer, Rare Export Marriage Armorial, circa 1790-1810

About

This porcelain Chinese export oversize meat platter has a removable strainer plate. Both pieces have central armorial heart-shaped shields for a young couple's initials. The platter has one shield, the strainer has two. This serving piece was made for export to the American market during the Federal Period. The understated decoration of blue banding, gold swags and darts are typical of American taste during this period. The platter was never personalized at the place of sale, however, so it was probably left-over merchant's stock, which is one reason why its condition is so good. The shield is topped by two Turtle Doves standing and facing each other on a black and gold silk bolster pillow. They are otherwise known as "Love Birds" since Turtle Doves mate for life. The shields are surrounded by blue silk draperies with tassels, trimmings and ribbons in cloth-of-gold. These decorations are all symbolic of loyalty, high social status, wealth and power, and hopes for a long, happy, prosperous marriage. It is a perfect modern-day wedding present.
