19th century English Large Faience Serving Platter with Chinoiserie Scene

About the Item

A 19th century English octogonal faience serving platter with scalloped rim decorated in red with a chinoiserie scene. The central scene depicts a table ornamented with pierced Chinese lattice work supporting a sizable vase with flowers alongside two fruit baskets. A phoenix with spread wings stands on a perch with similar decoration on the right, as if ready to fly. The borders are decorated with stylized peonies on a lace-like ground while four cartouches enclosing flower baskets adorn the canted corners. This English large faience serving platter circa 1880, with its oriental theme evoking a Chinese scholar's garden combined to a traditional ornamentation, would add a distinctive charm to every table.
