Oval Majolica Plate with Reticulated Rim

About the Item

This centre of this attractive oval majolica plate is decorated with a moulded decoration of overlapping vine leaves on a stippled ground. The reticulated arcaded rim also contains stylised foliage. The piercings in the rim were done by hand when the clay was in its leather hard stage before firing. Measures: The length is 315 mm (12.5 inches), the width 245 mm (9.5 inches) and it stands 32 mm (1.25 inches) high. The condition is very good apart from the obvious spots on the front where the glaze hasn't taken and some grit from the kiln has settled on the wet glaze. It would date from around 1880.
