Solid silver tray, Toribio Sanz de Velasco, Salamanca, Spain, circa 1800. With hallmarks. Published in Encyclopedia of Spanish Silver and American Viceroyalty. Editorial Torreangulo Arte Gráfico, Madrid, 1985. Page 399 and figure 1083. Flat circular tray with three legs in the form of bird claws holding balls, and slightly raised edge, decorated with moldings following the contours of the work: symmetrical in two halves, each has three wavy forms separated from each other by peaks. This type of sails is called "contours" by this profile, one of the most common table service throughout the eighteenth century in Europe since it began in Parisian silver by 1730. In this century, the influence of Madrid extended to all its surroundings. In Salamanca, in the second half of the 18th century, it lived in its best period, becoming one of the principal of the country thanks in large part to a generation of children of silversmiths who knew how to incorporate some decorative elements of Neoclassicism (such as the edge In this case) without substantially varying the types used before (round contour tray). To this generation belongs Toribio Sanz de Velasco, qualified by Jose Manuel Cruz Valdovinos as one of the "last two cathedral silversmiths" in History of the Applied and Industrial Arts in Spain (page 141).
