Victorian Sterling Silver Oval Tea Tray by James Dixon
About the Item
A magnificent, fine and impressive, antique Victorian English sterling silver oval tray, an addition to our Victorian teaware collection.
This magnificent antique Victorian silver tray, in sterling standard, has a plain oval form.
The large surface of this antique silver tray is encompassed with impressive bands of flat engraved Greek key and volute scrolling bands.
The surface of the tray if further ornamented with the contemporary bright cut engraved crest of a lion guardant, in his forepaws a Latin cross.
The raised rounded border of this antique tray is embellished with pierced vertical pales with an impressive applied bead decorated border to the rim.
The tray is fitted with two impressive rounded handpieces, accented with a continuation of bead decoration to the swept terminals.
The underside of the tray features six compressed bun style feet, in addition to the retailer's mark 'J. Mayer, Silversmith, Liverpool'.
Condition
This antique silver tray is an exceptional gauge of silver, exceptional quality and in exceptional condition.
The pierced and applied decoration is very sharp and the flat engraved ornamentation is very crisp.
Full hallmarks struck to the surface of the tray are all very clear.
Reflections in photographs may detract from the true representation of this Victorian oval tray in sterling silver.
